How to plan a study day

The preparation period for exams is a difficult time for almost every student. Finding the right time to study or motivating yourself to start studying is no easy task. Structured can help you in planning your study day and thereby, hopefully make it just a little bit easier to get through all of your exams in one piece. Here are some tips on how you can use Structured to organize your study sessions:

Plan ahead of time

To make it easier to start studying, you might want to plan your study days several days or weeks in advance. This will give you an overview of what still lies ahead of you and how much time you have to accomplish it. Furthermore, you can spread out your study days over a period of time, always leaving a day or two in between them. This method, called spaced repetition, helps you to commit the learned material to your long-term memory.

By clicking on the little calendar symbol in the upper-right corner of your app, you can jump to any day of the month and any month of your year. This overview helps you to select your study days.

Intervals and breaks

No one has an unlimited attention span. And while the exact amount of time a person can stay focused on a single task varies between individuals and the type of task, studying for hours at a time works for almost no one. You need frequent breaks to give your brain time to process and digest the information you have taken up. It is most commonly recommended that you study in intervals of 30 to 60 minutes, with 5 to 10 minute breaks.

Make sure to not only enter your study intervals in your timeline, but also your breaks to prevent you from forgetting to pause every once in a while. Additionally, when finishing several smaller study intervals, you get the satisfying feeling of checking something off your timeline more often!

Bring in variety

Studies show that the best way to learn something is to combine different methods of studying and thereby stimulating your brain with the same material in various ways. You can, for example, quiz yourself with index cards after a session of reading through your notes or textbook or take the time to visualize a topic by drawing a mind map.

By using the option to add subtasks, you can break up your study sessions into different sub-sessions with varying learning methods. Additionally, it might help you to mix different subjects on the same day when learning for multiple exams. That way, you don’t get frustrated with a topic and get a quick boost of energy when engaging in a new subject.

Take care of your health

By sacrificing sleep in order to get more study time in, you will sacrifice your energy levels and thereby your ability to concentrate on the next day. So, especially when studying, it is important to keep to a regular sleep schedule. Use Structured to remind you to go to bed at a reasonable time!

Just as important as sleep are your meals. While concentrating on something particularly challenging and important, we tend to slacken on regular meals. Set tasks for each of your meals on a study day and use notifications to remind you to take them seriously.

Physical activity also plays a big role in your physical and mental health. However, when you are fully submerged in your exam preparation, you might not have the time or energy to keep to your regular routine. To ensure staying active during these times, set tasks on your timeline for walks around the block or a light yoga or stretching session.

Make it colorful and improve your productivity

For most people, making studying fun is not possible. But with Structured you can at least make it colorful. Use all the colors of the rainbow to color code each topic you are studying and to make your timeline more aesthetically pleasing. Also, the huge selection of icons makes it easy for you to find the right symbol for every subject. And if you want to bring your study session up to the next level, you can connect your Structured app with one sec. This app prevents you from using social media while a task on your timeline is in progress, which might increase your productivity while studying.
